Today at work, I was innocently sweeping when in comes a woman, looking frazzled. She asks to see my boss and when I say that my boss is out, she begins to cry. I ask her what's wrong and she tells me that her car has broken down, her cell phone is dead, and she has two kids waiting for her to come get them from school so they can drive to Los Angeles to get on a plane to China. (So, I can understand why she might be in tears.) I offer her the use of our phone and she proceeds to call 411 to get some friends' phone numbers who might be able to pick up her kids for her. Unfortunately, none of them are home. I call my boss (on my cell phone) to make sure it's alright for this woman to be using our phone so excessively, but she does not pick up, either. The woman continues to make calls, trying to reach the school her children attend to no avail. My boss calls back a few minutes later, and I update her on the situation this woman is in. She speaks briefly with the (still slightly teary) mother, and when the woman hangs up she tells me that my boss has offered to drive her to pick up her children. My boss arrives promptly and whisks the woman away, but not before she gives me $10 for helping her. I don't know how things worked out after that, but I hope that woman's car got fixed and she made it to LAX on time.

I haven't posted in a while, partly because I've been sick and partly because I'm finishing college applications. So to tide you over I'm going to post one of my UC essays.

"Depressed. People throw the word around like it’s something to joke about. Let me tell you about 'depressed.' Depressed is eating deodorant because the container says to call poison control if ingested to get out of school. Depressed is going to the hospital with your dad and crying because you don’t want to hurt your family but you can’t stop. That was a particularly bad day. Sometimes, depressed is refusing to speak to your family members at all for weeks at a time, although you still love them but feel like they’re hurting you on purpose. For me, depressed was a terror of being at school, a terror that drove me to all of the things listed above, and more.

It began the first week of high school. The crowds, the large campus, and the academic expectations were all too much for me. I would cry all the way to school and once I arrived, I would sit in the counselor’s office, continuing to cry until it was time to go home. My parents took me to see psychologists but they weren’t helpful to me, probably because I couldn’t see a way out of the sadness, and so I didn’t even try to escape it. Weeks passed and my behavior worsened. Finally I went to a psychiatrist, who prescribed Prozac for me. After only a week, I began to improve. I no longer feared school, and I started actually attending class rather than just sitting all day in the counselor’s office. I had missed material during the weeks I’d been out, and I failed more than my share of quizzes in the following weeks. But despite these setbacks early in the semester, I ended up getting straight A’s that year.

There was a definite lesson to be had from all my unnecessary misery. I learned that it is okay to ask for help when you need it. I can now understand that if I’m having trouble in a class or even socially, there is always someone that is ready and willing to assist, if only I ask. My family especially was there to help me, even if I didn’t see it and chose to reject their assistance. Despite my temporary negative feelings towards them and my unhealthy habit of pushing them away during that time, I did still love them and appreciated their affection and support, because they did and still do want the best for me no matter how I behave or look.

I also discovered the value of clear thought, which I had been deprived of during those awful weeks. My ability to analyze a situation from an objective perspective is one of the things I appreciate most, as it aids me in many areas of my life, from academics to social situations. It also allows me to learn from my mistakes and come to reasonable decisions that both allow me to be happy and keep me a successful, participating member of society. Today I am a far happier person than I was as a freshman, and I believe that the strength and knowledge I gained throughout that time of my life will help me through the coming transition to college and many changes after that."

My Day

Today, I went to school. I took a test in one class, and saw a college representative about La Verne University. Since it's Thursday, I get out of school at 11:25. After school, I went to my mom's office, since the law firm she works at is moving suites in the building they currently reside in. I helped her pack a little, and scanned some documents for her. While I was there, she told me that there was a paper left in our mailbox saying that they tried to deliver a package and now we could pick it up at the post office. I left her office at maybe 1:15. I then went to the post office to pick up (what I hoped was) the iPod nano I had ordered off of Ebay maybe a month ago and hadn't heard about since.

I opened it in the car on the way home (while at a stoplight, safety first) and saw that it was a different color than I expected, but otherwise seemed nice enough. Once I got home, I plugged it in and found that iTunes wouldn't recognize it. I went to Apple's support site and tried what they said if iTunes wouldn't recognize the iPod. I was unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the iPod had been charging and so when I hit a button, it actually turned on. And what language was it in? Not English, that's for sure. So I screwed around with it for a while until I found the way to the languages area, where I changed the language to English. Unfortunately, I then learned that my new iPod is a fake, by way of various translations found in the menus, such as "setting" rather than "settings" or "power saving" instead of "low-energy mode." So I called my mom, and she filed a claim with Paypal (the way we paid) and Ebay. Then I went to work.

At work, I was alone for most of the time. I sold cupcakes, folded boxes, tweedle dee dee. My boss and a coworker came back from an event and were disappointed because they hadn't sold very many of the cupcakes they took. But they were gonna throw the extras away, so I offered to take some to the fire department. I got off work at 5:45, and headed over to the fire station. I parked, and walked around the whole building trying to find an entrance besides the giant garage where they keep the fire trucks. But nobody was there, and the entrance I found was locked. So I'll probably try again in a little while.

My family and I are going to go to Souplantation now, and then I shall return home and watch The Office, 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, and Community. And possibly Circus, a documentary I recorded off of PBS on the suggestion of Neil Patrick Harris' twitter page.
